J&K FTSCs see 4.5% convictions in POSCO: GoI | KNO

Srinagar, Dec 05 (KNO): Union Ministry on Friday said that Jammu and Kashmir recorded an average conviction rate of 4.5 percent under the Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) for rape and POCSO cases during the year 2024. The ministry of Women and Child Development Savitri Thakur informed Lok Sabha that the Union Government accords a top priority to children’s safety and has undertaken multiple initiatives to strengthen implementation of the POCSO Act. According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the figures revealed in the house reveal that 773 FTSCs including 400 exclusive POCSO courts were functional in 29 States and UTs as of 30 September 2025. “These courts have collectively disposed of 3.50 lakh cases, including over 2.25 lakh cases by exclusive POCSO courts since their inception.” “J&K is among the Union Territories where FTSCs are operational to ensure speedy trial of POCSO cases. However, the UT’s conviction rate of 4.5 percent remains among the lower figures reported across States and UTs,” it government said =. The government further informed that amendments to the POCSO Act made in the year 2019 introduced stringent punishments including death penalty. It also highlighted initiatives such as the POCSO e-Box for reporting abuse, awareness campaigns, training of officials, and monitoring by NCPCR. Pertinently, the Fast Track Special Courts Scheme was launched in 2019 and extended till March 2026. It is funded under the Nirbhaya Fund and aims to expedite trials in rape and POCSO cases nationwide, including in Jammu & Kashmir—(KNO)
